Arrangements for Sky Sheppey

With so many Aviation ‘Firsts’ which occurred on Sheppey during 1909 the Aviation Centenary Committee of Eastchurch Parish Council have now set the date to celebrate these events as

Saturday and Sunday 25th/26th. July 2009

Aviation enthusiasts and others have advised us that the events planned for 2009 at Eastchurch to celebrate the Centenary of British Aviation on Sheppey will arouse considerable national interest.
To accommodate expected numbers in region of 10,000 over the weekend, the use of a 35-acre site on which to hold the events, and for camping for exhibitors, together with adjacent parking facilities has been obtained just outside Eastchurch, at Parsonage Farm, by courtesy of Mr. & Mrs P.Taylor.
We are also presently in talks with supporting infrastructure providers.
As outlined in the ‘Flyers’ the theme of the weekend will be 100 years of British Aviation with particular reference to the part Sheppey played in aviation from 1909 up to closure of Eastchurch aerodrome in the late 1940’s.
Displays of up to 25 vintage aircraft, some static, others flying from the adjoining airstrip are being arranged. The following organisations have been contacted and agree to attend; about 50 Edwardian/Vintage vehicles from the Vintage Austin Register (who celebrated their Centenary in 2005), The Steam Car Club of GB (these include VCC vehicles), Swale Vehicle Enthusiasts Club (up to immediate post WW2), Vintage motorcycles, Invicta Military Preservation Society and the Big Fish Theatre Trust.
Other aviation-orientated organisations have indicated an interest and we hope that they will also be able to attend.

Planning is underway to produce a 1/3rd size outline metal aircraft (1909 vintage) as a permanent ‘landmark’ to record the Centenary.   A chalk (or similar) outline is to be placed on the By-Pass at Eastchurch with which the local schoolchildren can be involved. It is intended that this will be ‘unveiled’ a week or so before the main events.
